about the series
You Can't Take The Sky is about everyday bravery in Ukraine. Each episode, each voice, each sound, is an open window into the lived-experiences of everyday Ukrainians. These audio portraits show how Russia's invasion has given many Ukrainians new focus and purpose, a life different from what they knew before the full-scale war that started on 24 February 2022.
The conversations, recorded in between missile strikes and air sirens, stand as testaments to Ukrainian's no-surrender spirit. Rich in sound, these conversations move between moments of heartbreak, humor, and inspiration, capturing the emotional complexity of life under constant threat.
During war, life moves far faster, and some say they've aged years in only a matter of months or weeks. But when attacks are reported, people are at the ready, prepared to help clean up debris; shops and businesses reopen; restaurants and bars resume their boisterous being. People run to work and then, often, to a funeral. Daily life may be changed, but bit by bit, pieces of normalcy return, and Ukrainians carry on.
Our work honors all who believe in a free Ukraine and remembers those fallen since 2014, when Vladimir Putin first annexed Crimea and fighting began in the Eastern Donbas region.
